Retailers unveil NSW budget wish list
Australia's peak retail body says it wants major cuts to NSW payroll tax in the state budget.
In
a move to boost the sector, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA)
has outlined seven points they hope NSW treasurer Michael Baird will
address in Tuesday's budget.
Among the wish-list is a call for a
'minimum 25 per cent in reduction in red tape', which they say could
mainly be achieved through cuts to the payroll tax.
'Retailers in
NSW pay some of the highest payroll taxes in the country, which
hampers their ability to compete on a national scale,' ARA Executive
Director Russell Zimmerman said in a statement on Monday.
The
association has also called for improved transport links for the supply
of goods and investment in workplace training through VET funding.
The ARA said it also did not want to see any extra taxes or charges on households.
'NSW
retailers also need to see some relief from low consumer sentiment
through initiatives which stimulate household spending rather than
squeeze budgets any further,' Mr Zimmerman said.
While accepting
for the government to return to surplus, the association said this
should not come at the expense of business investment or further
pressure on household budgets.
